What fluid or gas does the seal contact? Aggressive chemicals → fluoropolymer (PTFE / FEP / PFA). Hot oils / fuels → FKM. Water / steam → EPDM. General oils → NBR.
Standard elastomers handle ~−40 to +150 °C. Beyond that → silicone (200 °C), FKM (200 °C), encapsulated FEP/PFA (260 °C). Cryogenic? → spring-energized FEP/PFA.
Static face seal? Almost any material works including solid PTFE. Dynamic / reciprocating? Need elastomer or spring-energized — solid PTFE alone does not recover.
Food contact → FDA / EU 10/2011. Pharma / medical → USP Class VI. Drinking water → WRAS / KTW. Tell us your spec and we will supply with the right documentation.
Tell us the fluid, temperature, pressure and size — we will recommend the right material.
