PTFE gaskets are particularly well suited to demanding industrial sealing applications that call for excellent chemical resistance, reliable tightness and dependable operation. The properties of PTFE can be put to work both in PTFE envelope gaskets and in a range of filled PTFE gaskets, whose construction and composition can be selected to match the requirements of the application.

PTFE envelope gaskets

In PTFE envelope gaskets the gasket core is enclosed in a PTFE envelope. Depending on the application, the core material can be a fibre-based gasket material, graphite or an elastomer. The PTFE envelope forms the chemically resistant outer surface of the gasket, which makes it well suited even to processes handling aggressive chemicals.

PTFE envelope gaskets can also be made on a metal corrugated ring (PTFE gasket on metal corrugated ring). In this construction the PTFE forms the chemically resistant sealing face while the metal corrugated ring supports the assembly and improves its mechanical strength. The construction is particularly suited to applications that call for good chemical resistance, mechanical strength and reliable sealing at the same time.

PTFE envelope gaskets are used in pipeline flange joints, process equipment, tanks and demanding sealing applications in the chemical industry.

Filled PTFE gaskets

Filled PTFE gaskets are made from a PTFE-based material to which fillers have been added to improve the properties of the material. Typical fillers include glass fibre, carbon, graphite and mineral-based materials. The choice of filler influences the mechanical strength, compressive strength, wear resistance and dimensional stability of the gasket, among other properties.

Filled PTFE offers the good chemical resistance of PTFE while allowing the properties of the material to be tailored to different operating conditions. These gaskets are used in pipework, flange joints, valves and process industry equipment.

Selecting a PTFE gasket for the application

The choice between a PTFE envelope gasket and a filled PTFE gasket depends on the medium being sealed, the temperature, the pressure, the flange joint and the mechanical and chemical resistance required of the gasket. A correctly selected PTFE gasket provides a long-lasting, reliable solution for demanding industrial sealing applications.
