Polyetherimide (PEI), best known under the brand name Ultem, is an amorphous high-performance engineering plastic with excellent mechanical strength, inherent flame resistance and very good dimensional stability at high temperatures. PEI withstands continuous service up to about 170 °C, maintains its stiffness in hot environments and offers good hydrolysis resistance. It is naturally transparent amber and meets stringent requirements in aerospace interiors, medical sterilisation equipment and electronics. PEI is often specified when high heat, flame retardancy and electrical insulation are all required together.
